Birchtree Farm

We have no real pasture here as yet, but a fellow Tamworth-ian graciously offered us the use of his roughly 2 acre field for the summer. We have been pasturing the sheep there using electronet to confine them to smaller areas and then rotating these areas every few days. The pasture is variable in terms of the grass and forbs available, so some areas they eat through pretty quickly and others take a bit longer.

The most recent move put them into an area where there are two large granite outcroppings about 30 feet apart. The larger of the two protrudes from the ground perhaps 2 feet at it's highest point, but it is at least 8 feet across and roughly round in shape. It's a *great* spot to play "king of the mountain". This area also had the lushest grass, apparently as some former llama inhabitants spent a lot of time in that spot and thoroughly fertilized it.

So the sheep were let in to the new grazing area, and started eating like crazy. Then they noticed the two granite outcroppings, and started running back and forth between them and over them, pronking like antelope, and in general behaving like total goofballs. New grass combined with rocks to climb on! Oh, JOY!

It was great fun to watch them. Only the oldest ram was too dignified to join in the general silliness. No one else has any dignity, so they pretty much just ran 'round and 'round until they wore themselves out and went back to grazing.
